How this calculator works

Estimate how many studs to buy for a straight wall with spacing, corner, opening, and waste allowances.

Formula

The tool counts layout studs from spacing, adds planning extras for corners and openings, then rounds a waste allowance up to whole studs.

Structural caution

This is a material estimator, not a wall design or load-path review.

Layoutfloor(wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1
Extras2 per corner/intersection + 4 per opening
Purchasebase studs + rounded waste allowance

Assumptions

  • Openings: Adds four studs per rough opening as a planning allowance.
  • Plates: Top and bottom plates are not included in the stud count.
